Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a Central Government scheme aimed to help girls across India. Fundamentally, this scheme protects the girl child from societal issues like gender-based abortions and improves child education. This government scheme was initially aimed at districts with a low sex ratio. Presently, it is one of the more notable schemes for girl child in India. The program is a joint effort by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, and the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

The scheme is a Central Government-run scheme that ensures complete financial aid to the District level component. Here, the funds are directly transferred to the account. This process ensures the scheme runs smoothly. Listed below are the objectives of this government scheme for girl child

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

This program is a saving scheme for girl child in India. The program helps parents create a trust fund for their child’s future education and marriage expenses. This saving scheme encourages the parents to set aside money for their daughter’s higher education and marriage. The program also mitigates the idea that the girl child is a financial burden on the parents. Commonly known as the SSY program, it is one of the more popular saving schemes for girl child in India.

This program is overseen by the Ministry of Finance and the Post Office of India. Presently, there are more than 1.26 crore accounts opened under this program. That amounts to more than 20,000 crores and indicates the scheme is a huge success in India.

The girl slowly removes the funds from the scheme till she is 18 years old.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The scheme is applicable for girl children born on or after 15th August 1997.
  • Only two girl children from every family can receive the benefits of this scheme.
  • The number of children in the family does not affect the eligibility criteria.
  • Benefits only to girl children belonging to families under the poverty line.


CBSE Udaan Scheme

The Central Board of Secondary Education along with the Ministry of Human Resources Development of the Indian Government administers and manages this scheme. The CBSE Udaan Scheem is one of the best government schemes for girl child in India. The program aims to increase the number of girls enrolled in famous technical and engineering colleges in India. Eligibility criteria:

  • Llimited to girl students studying in classes XI and XII.
  • The program is open to students studying in KVs/NVs/Government schools of any recognized board or CBSE-affiliated private schools in India.
  • The program is exclusively for Indian citizens residing in India.


Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme of Tamil Nadu

The Chief Minister’s Girl Child Protection Scheme of Tamil Nadu aims to reduce instances of gender inequality within the state. The scheme empowers and secures a girl child’s rights through direct government spending.

For a family that has only one girl child, a sum of RS. 50,000 is deposited in her name as a fixed deposit. The fixed deposit is made with the Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited if the girl child is born after August 2011.

If a family has two daughters, then a fixed deposit is made in each of their names. That deposit will have an amount of RS. 25,000.

The girl child receives a yearly incentive of RS. 1800 for schooling after the sixth year of the deposit. The deposit extends every five years until the girl reaches the age of 18. After 18, the girl is required to sit for the 10th-grade public test and pass. If they pass, the girl receives the whole amount, plus interest.

Eligibility criteria:

  • The family should have two female children and no male child.
  • At least one of the parents should have undergone sterilization (family planning) within 35 years.
  • The annual family income should be less than Rs. 72,000/-.
